names

Update: May 7th, 2009

My many names and their iterations;

How one goes from having one name to several takes some explaining, and I have been asked about my aliases before, so here they are;

Edward: I was playing a lot of Team Fortress 2 under the name “C64″, but since no one knew what “C64″ stood for, an acronym for the Commodore 64, the alias was kind of bland. One day, while playing Medic, and being called “Retarded” by some of my own teammates, not in a mean spirited way. We were all goofing off, and I was being especially stupid. So, after being called retarded, I changed my name to “Edward the Retarded Medic”, and this name has stuck with me quite well.

Sock: Once upon a time I was introduced to a clique of people, and I told them my name was Brock. One of the more prominent members of this clique said thoughtfully “Brock…Brock…I don’t like it. How ’bout Sock? I like it, it stays”. It’s been my longest running nickname at almost seven years now.

Feet: I used to play a lot of Final Fantasy XI, and my character name in FFXI was “Sock”. There was an auto translate function in FFXI because everyone shared servers. European players, Japanese players, North American, and players from all over the world were on one of two dozen or so servers. Hence, the ‘auto translate’ function. You couldn’t translate everything, just a handful of words and phrases, that would allow you to say things like “Quest, inside, Davoi, Help me out!”. It wasn’t very helpful. Things that were translated appeared in green and red parentheses, so it became quite common to just say random things with the auto translator, and to see what all you could translate. In the game, they provided you with a full list of words that could be translated, but typing part of a word, and pressing tab, would open up a list of translatable words that start with those characters. And, for some reason, Feet was in the auto-translator. Sock, Feet? It was only a stones throw away! As such, a large number of people referred to me as “Feet”.

Fee1: This is another iteration of Sock, or Feet. I was joining an IRC server as “Feet”, and in IRC, when two people have the same name, a 1 is added to the end of their name, and I was the second Feet on this server. However, my IRC client didn’t add a one to the end of my name, it replaced the last character with 1. As such, Feet became Fee1. Now a small number of people know me as “Fee1″.

Shrek: I play ice hockey, and I play goalie. Obviously to play ice hockey you need to join a team, and there are several times when you’re going to be the “new guy” on a team. I had just joined a team, and we were having our first practice. I showed up, in my goalie gear, of course, wearing a green practice jersey. I should mention I’m 6’4.5″, and weigh around 290 pounds. That’s about 194cms, and 130kgs. I’m big. During my first practice with my new team, I was in net, and this being the start of the season, I was in net for the first time in about seven months, so I was reattaining my grip on things, taking soft shots from my new teammates. During this pre-season rust-removing ritual, one of them went to bench, where a few people were sitting down, adjusting their skates, getting some water, and doing other rudimentary hockey practice things. He pointed at me, all 130 kilograms and almost 200 centimeters, wearing about 12 kilograms of gear, with my skates and helmet adding about another four centimeters, and asked the guys on the bench, “When did we draft Shrek?”, and that stuck.

Tree: Every good hockey team has a “Tree”. Before I played goalie, I was a defenseman, and the biggest, slowest, and hardest to move defenseman is always called “Tree”. I played on the same team for about three years, all three as a defenseman, and was referred to by my team as “Tree”.

Doctor Mowinckel: This a name for which I can take no credit for. It’s a song by the Norwegian rock band “Kaizer’s Orchestra”. Most of my handles for…pretty much everything are all “Doctor Mowinckel”, and most people in North America aren’t familiar with Norwegian rock music. So they either assume I am a doctor, my last name is Mowinckel, or both. Neither of these things is true. Very few people know me exclusively by this name.

    Kaizer’s Orchestra is my favorite. I found your website in an attemp to find out who Doctor Mowinckel really is. I found him, but unfortunately, he doesn’t seem good. He’s dead though.
